Sad news starts this week as Toronto’s Revue Cinema suffered a heartbreaking loss in the early hours of Monday morning, when its marquee buckled under the weight of age and, most likely, snow.
Roncesvalles residents awoke to find the massive overhang face down on the ground, blocking the entire western sidewalk.
By the end of the day, the sad task of clearing away the smashed remains was almost complete. I arrived in the late afternoon to watch the cleanup and take some photographs.

The above photo is a ghostly composite of this photo from yesterday and this photo taken in 2006 (which appears on page 62 of Circa: An Urban Retrospect and is just one of many scenes from the book that has vanished since recent publication.)

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Circa exhibit and book launch on Saturday night! It was an absolutely incredible night.
Various snapshots of the evening from Paul, Steph, Rannie & Ryan are up on Flickr. If you’ve got any photos uploaded, tag them “CIRCAbooklaunch”.
All 10 images in the exhibit will be up at Le Petit Dejeuner until March 16th.
The book is available for purchase here.

Tonight is the big book launch/exhibit opening/birthday party and, as promised, book orders are now being taken online.
I’m selling/shipping these myself right now to ensure honest shipping rates, so you can order directly via the website with Paypal or contact me at copies [at] urbanretrospect [dot] com for offline orders.
Of course, those in the Greater Toronto Area can arrange for pick-up and skip the shipping rates altogether.
See you tonight!

For Valentine’s Day, I received a copy of the City of Toronto Archives calendar, “Toronto After Dark”. This is a great little desktop calendar filled with night snapshots of Toronto from years past.
Right now, February is a hilarious flash photo of a 1943 snowblower in action while some guy on the sidelines sneaks his grin into the photo… appropriate for today’s weather.
Also, seeing as it’s February, it’s now on SALE for $3. A good deal. Drop by the Archives (Davenport & Spadina) before they’re all gone.

For those curious to see some images from Circa, here are a couple links of interest:
Images from the book, on Flickr: photos from the book and 1st exhibit.
Circa gallery, on Flickr –> a growing archive of photos from Toronto and other international locations that tie into the Circa theme. They capture the historic, both lively and fading, in present time.
